·         Notes: An intensive seminar sponsored by the National Writing Project in which accomplished teachers work together to 1) study ways to improve student writing, 2) share successful teaching practices through teaching demonstrations, 3) work on their own composing in various genres, 4) reflect upon their composing processes as a means to improve their teaching, and 5) develop a research literature review and teaching plan for an area of literacy instruction. Also includes professional development instruction. PREREQ: Must apply and be invited to participate.

 

ENGL 567-1100 Grammar and the Teaching of Writing: Theory and Practice (Open Institute)

·         Notes: Effective ways to fold grammar instruction into the language arts curriculum. A study of the theory and practice of teaching grammar and usage from rhetoric and composition perspectives. The course examines a variety of approaches to instruction in grammar and conventions of discourse communities. Prepares students for teaching writing in secondary schools and two-and four-year colleges, and for further graduate study. PREREQ: ENGL 561, ENGL 598, or PERM/INST.

·         Notes: Course Description: This course will overview inquiry approaches to teaching, and will focus on how unit, lesson and activity design can assist students to deep procedural and conceptual understandings.

October 8, 9: Our own fall reunion meetings and 2010 follow ups will take place Friday evening October 8 and all day Saturday October 9.  It will start on Friday evening with an ELDER CEREMONY to induct our retiring fellows, Jan Meeks and Frank Dehoney, into Elder status.  
On Saturday we have Todd Stiger coming to do work with us on technology and literacy.
We have arranged all this so it will not conflict with our partner organization's conference, ICTE, which will be in Pocatello through Friday noon.
We encourage you all to attend ICTE and then to come back to Boise for our own meetings.
We also encourage you to present at ICTE. We would love to have some of your demos featured, as well as a panel on BSWP.
